The Most Common Causes of Yellow Teeth in Kenya
Yellow, brown or grey teeth result from two types of staining: extrinsic (on the surface) and intrinsic (inside the tooth structure). Understanding which type you have determines the best treatment.
Extrinsic Staining (Surface Stains)
- Tea and coffee: The most common cause of yellow teeth in Kenya. Tannins in tea and coffee bind to enamel and darken teeth over time. Three or more cups a day causes significant discolouration.
- Tobacco: Smoking and chewing tobacco causes deep brown and yellow staining that is very difficult to remove with brushing alone.
- Poor oral hygiene: Inadequate brushing allows plaque and tartar to build up, giving teeth a yellow or brown appearance.
- Certain foods: Tomato sauce, berries, red wine and heavily spiced foods can stain enamel.
Intrinsic Staining (Inside the Tooth)
- Fluorosis: Very common in Juja, Thika Road and other areas of Kiambu County where groundwater has high natural fluoride levels. Fluorosis causes white spots, yellow patches or brown streaks that cannot be removed by whitening gel — they require tooth masking or crowns.
- Tetracycline antibiotics: Children given tetracycline antibiotics while their teeth are developing can have permanently grey or brown striped teeth.
- Ageing: As you age, enamel naturally thins and the yellow dentine underneath becomes more visible.
- Trauma: A knocked or dead tooth often turns dark grey or brown as the pulp breaks down.
How to Tell If You Have Fluorosis (Common in Juja and Thika)
Fluorosis is extremely common in the Juja–Thika Road corridor due to naturally elevated fluoride in groundwater and some piped water sources in Kiambu County. Signs include:
- White spots or streaks on teeth (mild fluorosis)
- Yellow or brown patchy areas (moderate fluorosis)
- Pitting or irregular surface texture (severe fluorosis)
Important: Teeth whitening gel does NOT work on fluorosis. The staining is inside the tooth structure, not on the surface. The most effective treatments for fluorosis in Juja are tooth masking (KSh 2,000 per tooth) or dental crowns. Our dentist at Joysmile Dental Clinic will diagnose your stain type and recommend the right treatment.
Teeth Whitening: What Works and What Doesn't
There are dozens of teeth whitening products on Kenyan shelves and online. Here is an honest guide to what actually works:
| Method | Effectiveness | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Professional whitening (clinic) | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent | 6–10 shades brighter in one visit |
| Whitening toothpaste | ⭐⭐ Mild | Removes surface stains only; slow results |
| OTC whitening strips | ⭐⭐⭐ Moderate | Takes weeks; inconsistent results |
| Charcoal toothpaste | ⭐ Avoid | Abrasive — damages enamel long-term |
| Baking soda | ⭐ Avoid | Very abrasive — thins enamel over time |
For fluorosis, surface whitening does not work at all — see tooth masking instead.
